Benefits of Laughter

Endorphin and serotonin are triggered when laughter is created. These hormones create feelings of happiness, love and excitement. Laughter works through the phenomenon called "facial feedback". This is when a certain expression can make you feel a certain feeling. This means that just smiling after laughing can boost your confidence, energy and/or mood for the day. Not only can laughter determine your mood, it also suppresses stress hormones to increase your feel-good phenomenon even more.

Laughing provides emotional satisfaction. We feel better when we let go all of the tension in our body while we laugh. Let's take a more scientific approach. Steady breathing, using the diaphragm, massages the internal organs and relaxes the chest and abdominal. When you laugh, you bring in loads of new oxygen, which stimulates the circulation of blood to the organs. Laughter also cools your stress response.

Laughing decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells. Infection-fighting antibodies are a result of laughing, and improves your resilience to recover from diseases. Laughing improves the function of blood vessels and protects humans from heart attacks and other conditions because of the increase in blood flow, all in result of laughter.

Laughing also has social benefits. It is a way to interact with friends and family.  The social benefits of laughing include the strengthening of relationships, the defusing of conflict and makes everything a bit more fun. If you are a secluded person, ways to laugh are watching a funny movie, going to a comedy club, spending time with a pet and even taking laughter yoga classes.
